The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is intensifying its efforts to prevent market fires, acknowledging that some of these incidents are deliberately caused.

According to PRO DO II Desmond Ackah, the Service is working closely with market managers to enhance fire safety, particularly in markets with wooden structures.

Speaking on JoyNews, he noted that to mitigate risks, the GNFS recommends the incorporation of modern technology and the creation of sufficient exits and escape routes, as many markets remain heavily congested.

However, accessing water for firefighting continues to pose a challenge due to the inadequate number of hydrants — a responsibility that falls to Ghana Water.

“We are in talks with Ghana Water to ensure we have enough hydrants,” he said.

DO II Ackah further emphasised that the GNFS is committed to fire safety and urged the public to cooperate with fire service personnel conducting educational visits.

According to him, this initiative aims to educate traders and market users on handling flammable goods and preventing fire outbreaks.

By working together, the GNFS hopes to significantly reduce fire incidents in markets across the country.
