Former Military Officer, Politician Lt Gen Emmanuel Erskine laid to rest

State funeral for the late Lieutenant General Emmanuel Alexander Erskine, took place today at the forecourt of the State House in Accra.

Lt. Gen. Erskine, born on 19th January 1937, was a distinguished military officer, who had a stint with partisan politics when Ghana returned to constitutional democracy in 1992.

He is well remembered as the Presidential Candidate of the People’s Heritage Party, PHP during the 1992 Presidential Election. He was a former Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

The late Lt Gen. Erskine was one of the nine members of the National Reconciliation Commission constituted by former President John Agyekum Kufuor to heal the nation after the June 4 and 31st December Revolution.

Catholic Metropolitan Arch Bishop of Cape Coast, Most Rev. Palmer Buckle described the late General Erskine as a humanitarian who executed his assignments diligently at both national and international levels.

Arch Bishop Palmer Buckle shared fond memories of the late Lt Gen. Erskine, praying that his good works will be continued for the betterment of the country.

Present at the funeral service were President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the Minister for Defence, Dominic Nitiwul who described the late Lt., Gen.Erskine, as a gift and mentor to officers of the security services and former President John Mahama.
