The Chief of Okorase in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region, Nana Asare Kumi, has added his voice to the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, calling for the need to continuously discuss the negative effects of galamsey and institute punitive measures for those found culpable.
Nana Asare Kumi voiced his displeasure during the Grand Durbar of the Okorase Ofie Ba Festival.
The Ofie Ba Festival, meaning homecoming, is the annual celebration of unity, heritage, and renewal for the chiefs and people of Okorase-Akuapem. It serves as a joyful return for all sons and daughters worldwide to reconnect with their roots and reaffirm their identity as members of one community. This year’s celebration, which was on the theme “Mobilising Our Communities for Sustainable Development, a Focus on Water and Sanitation,” brought together families, clans, and political actors. The festival offered the people the opportunity to honour their ancestors and traditions.
The Chief of Okorase, Nana Asare Kumi, in an interview with the media, said the theme for the celebration was chosen after careful assessment of the negative impact of illegal mining on the water bodies and forest reserves. He emphasised the need for the involvement of the youth engaging in the activities in discussions on how to curb the menace.
The Nkabomhene of Okorase-Akuapem, who doubles as the Chairman of the Festival Planning Committee, Ogya Ohye Amono Nana Dr. Akwetey Gyamfi, emphasised that the theme for this year’s Ofie Ba celebration serves as a reminder that development is not the responsibility of a single individual or institution, but rather requires a collaborative effort from all stakeholders.
Reflecting on their developmental challenges, he outlined some specific issues that, if addressed, will help position Okorase for long-term development and economic growth. He mentioned the absence of a market centre, deplorable road network, absence of a police post, and a fire station as some of their challenges.
The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North Constituency, Sammy Awuku, speaking to the media, appreciated the challenges confronting the people of Okorase and outlined some of the various initiatives he has embarked on to address the challenges and promote the development and growth of Okorase.
This year’s Okorase Ofie Ba Festival showcased the rich cultural heritage that defines Okoraseman through traditional drumming, songs, and dances. All the people of Okorase, including community members, leaders, stakeholders, and partners, were encouraged to contribute their quota to the growth and progress of Okorase.
