The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has celebrated its 90th anniversary with a grand launch in Accra.
Speaking at the event on July 31, 2025, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, lauded the corporation for its immense contribution to community engagement.
“GBC has provided access to information to maximise community engagement and promote social education. As a public broadcasting institution, GBC is committed to accountability and has provided a platform for dedicated counselling and critical help through various projects,” he said.
Mr Dwumfour noted that GBC’s focus on community engagement and social education is essential for national development and promoting unity.
He also praised GBC’s efforts in supporting local communities by delivering content that serves the public interest.
“The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation has been providing facts from a timeless perspective and has achieved key milestones. Another important aspect of public broadcasting is its support for local communities. GBC, as the only public broadcasting company, promotes access to information, critical thinking, and educational services,” he stated.
He added that the corporation has helped preserve Ghana’s cultural heritage by showcasing local music, movies, and traditions, hallmarks of the national broadcaster.
Mr Dwumfour further commended GBC for playing a critical role in holding public officials accountable through investigative journalism and critical reporting.
“In fact, GBC has contributed to ending self-censorship, which has made them self-reliant over the years,” he added.
