President John Dramani Mahama, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, will officially launch Ghana’s ‘One Child, One Tree’ initiative today, June 5, 2025 — in commemoration of World Environment Day.

The Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, revealed this in an interview with GBC. The launch will take place at the Atomic Cluster of Schools at Kwabenya in one of the -E-blocks built by President John Dramani Mahama.

According to the Minister, the programme aims to engage school children across Ghana in planting and nurturing trees as a way to promote environmental sustainability.

Dr. Murtala Muhammed said the seedlings for the tree planting exercise will be provided by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), an agency under his ministry.

The Minister explained that children were chosen for this initiative because of their naturally competitive spirit, which would motivate them to protect and nurture the trees they plant. He also indicated that this initiative will encourage and instill sustained care that will live with children as they grow.

“This initiative seeks to instill environmental consciousness in children so they grow appreciating tree planting as both a moral duty and a responsibility,” Dr. Murtala Muhammed said.

The minister also revealed plans to introduce awards and incentives for children who are able nurture and grow their trees under the guidance and supervision of their techers.

The launch of the ‘One, One Tree’ initiative comes against the backdrop of Ghana’s broader efforts to promote environmental sustainability and restore forest cover.

The event will feature an anticipated participation from ministers, members of parliament, the diplomatic community, and the Ghana’s Most Beautiful queen, who is known for her eco-green advocacy.
