Gregory Afoko, an alleged key suspect in the murder of former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama, has finally been granted bail in the sum of GH₵500,000 after spending nearly ten years in detention.

The Accra High Court, presiding over the murder case, set bail conditions at GH₵500,000 with two sureties. The sureties must have fixed places of residence, with one required to own a landed property.

Afoko, the younger brother of former NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko, was arrested in 2015 following the brutal acid attack that led to Adams Mahama’s death outside his home in Bolgatanga.

Since his arrest, Afoko has remained in custody as legal proceedings dragged on, raising serious concerns about judicial delays and fair trial rights.

Today’s ruling comes after years of unsuccessful bail applications and growing public concern over his prolonged pre-trial detention.

Despite multiple attempts by his legal team to secure bail, the court had consistently denied his requests—until today, February 21, 2025.

His trial commenced in 2019 and concluded in 2023. However, the jury returned a hung verdict on both counts of murder and conspiracy to murder, leading the court to order a retrial. He was subsequently re-arrested and denied bail.

However, on Friday, February 21, 2025, his legal team successfully argued for his release on bail pending trial.

Although securing bail marks a significant step forward for his defense, the trial remains ongoing as the state continues its prosecution.
