Many fishermen at Senya Breku in the Central Region have been attacked by armed men who seized their outboard motors and generator sets, leaving them stranded at sea.
The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday, February 26, when the fishermen were returning to shore after a night of fishing.
Reports say the attackers, who were operating a black boat, opened fire before robbing the fishermen. The armed men allegedly targeted seven canoes during the attack.
Speaking to Citi News, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, confirmed the incident. She explained that the fishermen who were heading towards the Nyanyano side were ambushed at sea.
“There was an armed attack at sea. Our fishermen usually go out at night and return early in the morning. Those who went toward the Nyanyano side were reportedly attacked,” she said.
According to her, the attackers made away with outboard motors and generator sets from the fishermen’s canoes. She added that investigations are ongoing but declined to reveal the nationality of the suspects.
The MP further disclosed that security agencies have been deployed to the area to track down the perpetrators. She said the military, the Marine Police, and the Navy have all been engaged to help restore calm and ensure the safety of fishermen.
The attack has left many in the fishing community worried, as such incidents threaten their livelihoods and safety at sea.
