First Lady, Mrs. Lordina Mahama, commemorated this year’s Mother’s Day with a heartfelt gesture of compassion and solidarity, spending the day with mothers at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital instead of a private celebration.
On Sunday, May 11, Mrs. Mahama visited the maternity block of Ghana’s premier health facility, where she presented thoughtful gifts and shared moments of warmth and encouragement with mothers on admission. Her visit brought comfort and smiles to many women recovering from childbirth.
More significantly, the First Lady, through the Lordina Foundation, settled the medical bills of 224 mothers, offering timely relief to families burdened by hospital costs. The gesture underscored her long-standing commitment to maternal health and the welfare of women, especially during vulnerable periods of childbirth and recovery.

Sustained Impact Through the Lordina Foundation
This Mother’s Day initiative forms part of Mrs. Mahama’s broader advocacy for women’s health and empowerment. Through the Lordina Foundation, she has spearheaded numerous interventions focused on improving healthcare access, particularly for women and children in underserved communities.
The Foundation has consistently provided essential medical supplies and equipment—including incubators, delivery beds, and sanitary materials—to under-resourced health facilities across the country.
It has also constructed and equipped maternity and children’s wards in areas such as Nkoranza in the Bono East Region and Bole in the Savannah Region. The recently commissioned Bodom Maternity & Children’s Ward, attached to the Bodom CHPS Centre, offers antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care.

In addition to infrastructural support, the Lordina Foundation regularly organizes outreach programmes, providing free health screenings, maternal education, and support for pregnant women. Its holistic approach to community health has contributed to reducing maternal and infant mortality while empowering women and girls through education and livelihood assistance.
A Legacy of Service
Originally known as the Alternative Source of Income Programme (ASOIP), the Lordina Foundation has expanded its scope to include:
⦁ Donations to orphanages and support for women in “witch camps”
⦁ Scholarships for brilliant but needy students
⦁ Providing destitute artisans with start-up kits to enable them make meaningful livelihoods out of their acquired skills
⦁ Providing Persons with Disabilities groups with targeted support

Mrs. Lordina Mahama’s Mother’s Day outreach is more than a symbolic act—it reflects her enduring dedication to uplifting the vulnerable, strengthening health systems, and advocating for women’s dignity and well-being.
Through her leadership and the Foundation’s impactful work, she continues to champion the rights and needs of Ghanaian mothers and families across the country.
