President John Dramani Mahama says his government will irrigate more than 2 million hectares of land to support intensive agriculture under the 24-Hour Economy initiative.

Speaking at the official launch of the programme in Accra, President Mahama explained that the large-scale irrigation project falls under Grow 24, one of the key components of the 24-Hour Economy strategy. He said the goal is to transform Ghana’s agricultural sector with year-round farming, modern technology, and improved support for farmers.

“This bold move will help us grow more food, reduce imports, and create jobs across the agricultural value chain,” the President said.

According to him, Grow 24 will also lead to the creation of agro-industrial parks where harvested crops will be processed, packaged, and prepared for the market. These parks will help reduce post-harvest losses and improve income for farmers.

President Mahama added that the programme will focus on mechanisation, farmer cooperatives, and easy access to quality seeds, fertilisers, and other farming inputs. He stressed that the broader 24-Hour Economy is not just about working longer hours but ensuring that Ghana’s economy runs efficiently at all times.

“Our aim is to increase productivity across agriculture, industry, and services by keeping key sectors active day and night. Agriculture is a key pillar, and irrigation is the starting point for this transformation,” he said.

The 24-Hour Economy initiative is designed to encourage continuous production and service delivery, supported by infrastructure, digital systems, and financing options. It also includes components focused on manufacturing, tourism, transportation, and skills development.

President Mahama assured Ghanaians that the government is committed to making agriculture more profitable, attractive, and sustainable through smart investment and innovation.
