A Warrant Officer Class II with the Ghana Armed Forces has been arrested for allegedly attempting to sell military-grade weapons to a civilian buyer in Bekwai in the Ashanti Region.
In an intelligence-led operation on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at about 2:30pm, security officers arrested W.O. II David Kofi Brew of the 4th Battalion in Kumasi at the Bekwai Shell Filling Station, where he was reportedly finalising a deal to supply firearms to an undercover operative posing as a buyer.
The operation, coordinated by the Ashanti South Police Intelligence Directorate, formed part of broader efforts to clamp down on illegal arms supply networks believed to be feeding criminal groups in Obuasi and neighbouring communities. Preliminary intelligence suggested that the soldier was allegedly involved in the clandestine sale of weapons.
Investigators are said to have engaged the suspect through undercover channels on December 15, 2025, during which he reportedly arrived in a military vehicle with registration number 54 GA 92 to meet an operative introduced to him as an intermediary. During that meeting, he allegedly indicated that he could supply various weapons, including M16 and G3 rifles as well as pistols, and quoted a price of GH¢80,000 for an M16 rifle.
The suspect is reported to have informed the undercover agent that the agreed weapon and an additional pistol were ready for collection. He was arrested when he arrived at the Bekwai Shell Filling Station to hand over the firearms.
Security officers retrieved a TMM 22 assault rifle loaded with 99 rounds of ammunition and two 12-round magazines, as well as an Ash Taurus GX2 pistol loaded with 100 rounds of ammunition and three 12-round magazines.
During interrogation, the suspect is said to have admitted supplying weapons to individuals in and around Obuasi. He is currently in custody while further investigations continue and formal communication is prepared for his military superiors.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest other suspected accomplices linked to the illegal arms supply chain.
