The Minerals Commission of Ghana says it has strong evidence that Akonta Mining Limited was involved in illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, inside the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.

The company has consistently denied any wrongdoing. However, the Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Isaac Andrew Tandoh, revealed on Citi FM’s Breakfast Show that they possess video footage and location data clearly showing Akonta Mining operating in the protected forest.

“The evidence we have now is more than enough. We have advised the Attorney General to take over the case and ensure those behind these illegal acts are punished,” Mr. Tandoh stated.

He dismissed Akonta Mining’s denials as a public relations tactic that would not prevent the law from taking its course. “Writing letters or issuing denials in newspapers won’t stop us. This is just the beginning,” he added.

On Monday, April 21, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources also announced the cancellation of Akonta Mining’s lease. The Minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, explained that while the company was permitted to mine in areas outside the forest, it went ahead to operate illegally in both the Aboi and Tano Nimiri Forest Reserves in the Western North Region.
