The CEO of the Petroleum Hub Corporation, Dr. Anthony Aubynn, has called for a complete repeal of Ghana’s forest mining regulation, arguing it undermines environmental protection and fails to control small-scale mining effectively.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s ‘Point of View’, Dr. Aubynn criticized Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, which grants the Minister authority to permit mining in forest reserves.

“This law makes it possible to mine in forests, and that is dangerous,” he said.

He explained that while older laws made mining in forests difficult, L.I. 2462 opens the door too widely.

He called for its replacement with a new framework that prioritizes conservation and responsible mining.

On illegal mining, or galamsey, Dr. Aubynn said it is too early to judge the current administration’s efforts but expressed cautious optimism.
