Chief Executive Officer of the Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, has announced that Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462 will be revoked when Parliament resumes sitting.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV, Mr. Gyamfi explained that the government, under the leadership of President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has decided that the law must be scrapped completely. He said the LI, which gives the President the power to grant mining leases in protected forest zones, is harmful and must be removed in its entirety.
“There were debates about whether we should amend or revoke it because some people feared that revoking it would create a gap. But many believe the law is poisonous and should be thrown out completely — and the government has listened,” Mr. Gyamfi said.
He revealed that he had spoken to the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Ayine, who assured him that preparations are complete and that the revocation will happen as soon as Parliament resumes.
Mr. Gyamfi also stressed that the devastation caused by illegal small-scale mining is a more urgent issue to address than matters related to the Gold Board. He said the government has already begun efforts to fight illegal mining, even before the LI is officially revoked.
