The Muslim World League, under the auspices of the Saudi Arabian Government, has donated food relief items to the victims of the Akosombo flood disaster at Mepe Degome, in the North Tongu district of the Volta region. The gesture at a cost of over $40,000, comprises essential food relief items aimed at alleviating the hardships faced by the victims.
The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald letsa, who received the items for onward distribution disclosed that government will in the coming days assist affected farmers and fisherfolks who have lost their source of livelihood due to the disaster.
The Akosombo flood disaster has left a trail of devastation, disrupting the lives and livelihoods of countless individuals and families in the Volta region region. However, with the support of government, corporate bodies and organizations like the Muslim World League, hope seems to shine through amidst the challenges.
Over one thousand victims of the flood disaster benefited from the gesture. Food items distributed included oil, spaghetti, rice, milk, mackerel and sugar all packaged in a box.
The Country Director for the Muslim World League Dr. Mohammed Bashir Adams, empathised with the victims of the Akosombo flood disaster. He highlighted the organization’s commitment to humanitarian aid and their dedication to assisting communities in need around the world irrespective of religion and sects.

He emphasized the importance of collaboration between international organizations, governments, and local authorities in addressing humanitarian crises effectively. “The Muslim World League, (MWL) exemplifies a commitment to inclusivity and cooperation. Recognizing the importance of humanitarian aid, the organization extends its reach to those in need, irrespective of their religious or ethnic background.”, he said.
He noted that “Responding to the call of duty in line with its humanitarian activities, the (MWL) has decided to provide relief to the affected communities. This gesture underscores the organization’s core mandate of supporting people facing adversity, emphasizing a commitment to alleviating suffering without discrimination.”
The Member of Parliament for the North Tongu Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, stressed the need for comprehensive support and assistance to ensure that those impacted by the Akosombo flood disaster can rebuild their lives and livelihoods.
“These tents even though are quiet helpful now, and we thank all those who have donated the tents, they will not be very helpful when the rains come. Our greatest worry now is how to complete their resettlement before the raining season. they are waiting on leadership to come to their aid to construct resettlement homes so that they can move into such homes.”, he said.

Expressing gratitude for the gesture, the Volta regional Minister Dr. Archibald Letsa, emphasized the significance of international cooperation in times of crisis. He underscored government’s commitment to provide additional aid to farmers and fisherfolk who have been severely impacted, ensuring that they regain their means of livelihood in the aftermath of the disaster. “To help those who are farmers but have lost their farms, those who were fisher people and have also lost their fish farms and so on. So government is making provision and very soon the Minister of Agriculture and the minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture will also come,” he announced.
“There are plans to help the people restore their livelihoods. Yesterday we had a meeting with the Minister for Works and Housing and they are also planning to come down as a government to construct some resettlements. So within the week there is a committee to present a report and the committee will come down here to meet the chiefs and people and agree on the appropriate structure for the resettlements,”Dr. Letsa added.
