The National Anti-illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has carried out a bold pre-dawn swoop on one of the Western Region’s most notorious illegal mining enclaves, popularly known as “Yellow Face.”
The operation, executed in the early hours of Saturday, caught residents and galamsey operators off-guard. Eyewitnesses say the sudden presence of the heavily deployed taskforce sent illegal miners fleeing into nearby bushes to evade arrest.
During the raid, the taskforce set ablaze several makeshift structures, temporary shelters and improvised equipment believed to be used for illegal mining activities. Preliminary assessments also uncovered alarming quantities of illicit drugs, as well as stockpiles of dynamites, indicating the scale and sophistication of the criminal operations at the site.
A NAIMOS source told reporters that the “Yellow Face” enclave had long been on their radar due to its extensive environmental destruction and links to wider criminal networks.
“This is just one of several coordinated actions. We will continue to launch surgical operations in the coming days and weeks to clamp down on galamsey and break the chain of illicit drug use associated with these sites,” the source added.The Secretariat is urging the public to support ongoing national efforts to protect water bodies, forest reserves and farmlands from destruction.
