Cable theft affecting loss of revenue in Ghana -NEDCo

The Management of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) in the Sunyani Area, has expressed worry over the growing incidence of cable theft at their substations by some unscrupulous people in the former Brong Ahafo area.

According to Management, the stealing of cables used to connect power from NEDCo transformers to supply Communities is affecting their operations, especially through loss of revenue.

The stealing of NEDCo cables and consumption meters of the GWCL is becoming alarming. Just recently, the Ghana Water Company Limited complained about the rampant stealing of consumption meters and other connection equipment. The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) is also expressing a similar sentiment of growing cable theft at their substations.

The Sunyani Area Manager of NEDCo, Eng. Eugene Addo-Odoi in an interview said the situation is affecting the quality of supply to affected customers hence the need for the public to help clamp down on these people.

He said they will deepen collaboration with security agencies to nip what he describes as the devastating operations of cable thieves in the Bono, Ahafo, and Bono East Regions (BABE) in the bud. Cable theft, often carried out at nighttime, is increasing across the BABE regions, throwing communities into sudden darkness and promoting insecurity in these areas.

The Area Engineer, Eng. Eric Ofori recounts a situation where a cable was stolen in Kenyase in the Ahafo region leading to damage of a 35.5 KVA transformer worth 120,000 Ghana cedis.
