Forensic psychiatrist Mr. John Kuku Dsane has called on parents to observe and nurture their children’s natural interests and talents from an early age because every child has a gift that, when developed, can lead to a fulfilling and successful career.

Speaking on the Headline Segment of the GTV Breakfast Show hosted by Kafui Dey on 17th June, 2025, Mr. Dsane said many parents intentionally stifle their children’s potential by discouraging passions that don’t align with conventional career paths.

“Everyone has a gift, and if it is identified and developed, it can lead to a successful career,” he said. “Parents must watch their children closely and support what they naturally enjoy doing.”

He cited the example of British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua, who followed his passion for sports and rose to become a world heavyweight champion, making Africa proud on the global stage.

Adding to the discussion, clinical psychologist Mr. Daniel Bruce stressed the emotional and health benefits of sports, urging parents not to discourage their wards from participating in physical activities.

“Sports have a unique way of resonating with us emotionally,” he said. “It is sad that some parents stop their children from engaging in sports the moment they show interest. Sports not only build fitness from a young age but can also help in the early detection of conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, sickle cell, and anemia, especially during adolescence.”

Mr. Bruce also appealed to the Ministry of Education to give greater attention to sports in schools, describing it as a key avenue to building a healthier nation.

The conversation was energized by Anthony Joshua’s recent visit to Ghana, including an appearance at the Bukom Boxing Arena over the weekend. He was used as a real-world case study by the guests to affirm that when children are supported in their natural interests, especially sports, they can achieve greatness and uplift the name of an entire continent.
