The Ghana Police Service has announced the temporary closure of selected roads in Accra on Friday, 15 August 2025, to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow during the interdenominational and interfaith state funeral for victims of the recent military helicopter crash. The ceremony will be held at Black Star Square.
According to the Police, the following roads will be closed:
- 28th February Road from CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction
- Osu Cemetery Traffic Light to Lokko Street
- Castle Road from AU to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light
- Starlet 91 Road at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection
Traffic diversions
Motorists from La, Labone and Osu heading to the Central Business District and the Ministries via 28th February Road will be diverted through Salem Avenue Road at Castle Traffic Light to link with Oxford Street.
Drivers from Lokko Street, Osu, towards Castle Road are to use Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street in Osu.
Those from John Evans Atta Mills High Street heading to Black Star Square will be diverted via Liberia Road at CEPS Traffic Intersection towards the National Theatre Traffic Light.
Traffic from AU Circle to Castle Road will be diverted through Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads to link with Abdul Nasser Road in front of the Ghana Institute of Journalism.
Parking restrictions
Only vehicles with approved red windscreen stickers marked “VVIP” will be permitted entry into the Black Star Square arena and parking areas.
Designated car parks
Parking areas earmarked for the event include the VVIP/VIP lots at Black Star Square, the forecourt of the State House, the International Conference Centre, Access Bank car park, Osu Cemetery car park, Accra Sports Stadium car park, Ministries areas, Ministry of Food and Agriculture car park, Marine Drive Football Park and Afua Sutherland Car Park.
Enforcement measures
The Police have cautioned against parking at unauthorised locations or driving through roadblocks. Security and dignitary vehicles will be checked before access is granted. Traffic officers will guide motorists to designated car parks, while towing trucks will remove abandoned or wrongly parked vehicles.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, urged motorists to plan alternative routes ahead of time and cooperate fully with security agencies to ensure effective traffic management during the solemn occasion.
