The Ashanti Regional Police Command has confirmed an armed robbery attack on the Berekum Chelsea Football Club, resulting in the death of one of the team’s players, Dominic Frimpong.
Dominic Frimpong sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but passed away while receiving medical treatment.
A statement signed and issued by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, DSP Godwin Ahianyo, explained that the police received a distress call of a suspected armed robbery attack at a portion of the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumoh Sreso road, popularly known as KDS, in the Nyinahin district in the Ashanti at about 10.30 pm on Sunday, April 12, 2026.
Patrol teams were immediately dispatched and on arriving at the scene, they found a VIP bus with registration number AM 9334-20, carrying about 30 football players and officials of Berekum Chelsea travelling from Samreboi to Berekum after a football match, had skidded into a bush, while attempting to escape from the robbery.
It said the suspected gang involved six armed men, three of whom were wielding pump-action guns.
It said another victim of the robbery attack, George Owusu Afriyie, aged 52 years, was also robbed of GHC4,500.
The Police retrieved two spent BB cartridges from the scene to assist investigations.
According to the statement, the Regional Police Command has deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area, and is currently on a manhunt for the suspects.
It has assured members of the public that the perpetrators will be arrested within the shortest possible time and therefore urged everyone to remain calm and continue to have confidence in the Police in their efforts to track down the suspects and bring them to justice.
