A solemn Requiem Mass was held Friday night at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Accra to honour His Holiness Pope Francis, the late Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church. The ceremony brought together religious leaders, government officials, and faithful from across the country in a heartfelt tribute.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa represented President John Dramani Mahama at the event, delivering a poignant eulogy that celebrated Pope Francis as “an exceptional spiritual leader and Africa’s champion.” He highlighted the Pope’s unwavering advocacy for social justice, peace, and the end of economic exploitation on the continent.
“Pope Francis spoke boldly against the exploitation of Africa and famously declared that Africa is not a mine to be looted by the powers that be,” Ablakwa said. “His legacy of simplicity, compassion, and tireless commitment to peace will inspire generations of Africans.”
The Mass was attended by prominent figures including Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah, the Deputy Minority Leader, and religious leaders from various denominations, reflecting the Pope’s dedication to interfaith harmony.
In his remarks, Ablakwa urged Ghanaians to emulate the late Pontiff’s virtues: “May we all learn from his godly compassion, modesty, selflessness, and uncompromising love for humanity.”
The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has also announced nationwide memorial services to continue honoring his legacy of humility, peace, and social justice.
