The Northern Regional office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has appealed to striking staff of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) to exempt critical institutions from their ongoing service withdrawal in Tamale.

In a letter addressed to NEDCo, the Northern Regional Manager of PURC, Mr. Ali Simon Jarana, urged the workers to continue providing electricity-related services to health facilities, security installations, educational institutions, and Ghana Water Company installations.

Mr. Jarana noted that power supply to these strategic sectors is vital in ensuring continuous healthcare delivery, public safety, academic activities, and access to potable water.

He warned that the withdrawal of services from such institutions could have severe consequences on the well-being of residents in the metropolis.

The PURC’s appeal comes in the wake of a decision by NEDCo staff to halt all field operations in Tamale and its environs following unprovoked attacks by some youth groups on Wednesday, July 30, 2025. The staff declared the strike during an emergency meeting held the following day, citing safety concerns.

Mr. Jarana also called for calm among residents, assuring the public that efforts are underway to resolve the impasse and restore full electricity services.

The PURC said it is engaging all relevant stakeholders to ensure a swift return to normalcy and to prevent further disruption of essential services.
