The Majority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has expressed his support for the creation of a new constituency out of the Chiana-Paga Constituency in the Upper East Region. The call for a separate constituency was made during the 10th Anniversary celebrations of the enskinment of Azukodaana and the inaugural Azuko Festival in Sirigu, Kasena Nankana West District.
Addressing a large crowd at the Grand Durbar ceremony, Ayariga acknowledged the concerns raised by local leaders about the challenges of managing such a large constituency.
“I cannot make a definite promise but I sympathize with you, I agree with you and I fully support you and I will join you to fight for that course.” Ayariga said.
“This has been a call for almost 12 years anytime we visited this area, arguing that it will facilitate better representation, easier access to resources, and more focused development for this area.”

The call for the new constituency was first raised by the Paramount Chief of Sirigu, Naba Atogumdeya Roland Akwara III and echoed by the Member Of Parliament (MP) Nikyema Billa Alamzy, who highlighted the difficulties of managing the Chiana-Paga Constituency due to its vast size.
“Our constituency is too large to effectively serve the people,” the chief stated in his address. “We need a separate constituency to ensure that our people are properly represented and that we can address their needs more efficiently.”
The current Chiana-Paga Constituency is one of the largest in the region, covering a vast expanse that includes multiple towns and villages. Leaders in the area have long argued that the geographical size and population of the constituency make it difficult for lawmakers to adequately address the needs of their constituents.
As the conversation around constituency reorganization continues, Ayariga’s comments signal a growing recognition of the need for administrative adjustments to improve governance and public service delivery in the Upper East Region.
