The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has announced that the ongoing crackdown on street begging by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) will soon be extended to other regions across the country.

In a Facebook post on Friday, the Minister shared an update on the GIS’s recent operation in Accra, where 2,241 foreign nationals involved in organized street begging were arrested. The operation, which took place in the early hours of May 16, 2025, was based on intelligence gathered by the service.

Among those arrested were 909 adults and 1,332 children, including 961 males and 1,280 females.

“I want to commend the personnel of GIS for their commitment to national security,” the Minister stated. He acknowledged public calls for similar actions in other cities such as Kumasi and Tamale, and assured Ghanaians that the exercise is part of a nationwide effort.

“This is a nationwide exercise that began in Accra and will be extended to other regions soon,” he said, urging citizens to support the initiative when it reaches their communities.
