The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has announced that government has successfully cleared all outstanding debts owed to contractors working on the Suame Interchange Project. This significant financial milestone is expected to end months of stagnation and allow construction to resume as early as next week.
In a social media announcement on April 1, 2026, Minister Agbodza confirmed that the cleared payments cover all certificates raised by contractors that had remained unpaid since 2024. The prolonged payment delays were a primary driver behind the project’s recent setbacks, which have caused significant traffic congestion and economic disruption for residents of the Ashanti Regional capital.
The facility is now a three-tier interchange, downscaled from the original four-tier plan to avoid extensive demolitions and save approximately GH¢100 million in additional costs. The government has allocated an additional GH¢3 billion to ensure the completion of the revised three-tier project and the surrounding outer ring road.
Contractors are now expected to fully remobilize to the site in the coming days. The Suame Interchange, a critical component of the government’s “Big Push” infrastructure program, has undergone a recent design modification.
Minister Agbodza expressed gratitude to the public for their patience during the delays, reaffirming the government’s commitment to enhancing mobility and road safety across Ghana. This debt clearance follows similar recent settlements for other major projects, including the Accra-Tema Motorway expansion and the Ofankor-Nsawam road
