About 390 students from primary, junior high and senior high schools in the Tamale Metropolitan Area took part in this year’s 69th Independence Day parade.

The parade, held at the Jubilee Park, saw school children from six primary schools, four junior high schools and three senior high schools exhibiting remarkable marching skills to celebrate the day.

Addressing the parade after the march, Tamale Metropolitan Director of Education, Konlan Nelson, said the theme, “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,” is timely as there is growing indiscipline in varied dimensions in society.

He mentioned drugs, riots in schools, insecurity, poverty, lack of parental control, and diseases as major impediments to the country’s prosperity.

Mr Konlan said it is high time both the young and old reconstruct their lives by addressing the systemic gaps that exist in politics, religion, education, health, business, and security to rebuild a workable and prosperous society so that hope can be restored, especially among the youth.

The Mayor of Tamale, Alhaji Adam Abubakari Takoro, said the Mahama-led government has brought massive economic stability and development, especially in the education sector.

According to him, the launch of the Students Loan Trust Fund and the commissioning of an office for the Northern Sector in Tamale is a major step aimed at relieving parents and students from the burden of financing tertiary education.

He appealed for continuous support from the people of Tamale to help maintain law and order and also fight the use of hard drugs and crime in the metropolis.
