The Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) has issued a strong statement in response to recent events during the Health Minister’s visit to the facility on April 22, 2025.
Widely circulated videos on social media captured a heated exchange between the Minister of Health, Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and the Head of the Accident and Emergency Department. The confrontation arose over the management of a patient referred from another facility who, tragically, passed away.
However, the DATTH contends that the public narrative does not reflect the full context of the situation.
According to the Association, their colleague was simply explaining the challenges faced in managing the patient, including resource constraints, when the discussion unexpectedly escalated.
They stressed that the Head of Department has consistently exhibited professionalism and dedication in his role.
The Association expressed disappointment with media reports, which they say have unfairly damaged the reputation of their colleague and misrepresented the situation. They called on the media to exercise caution and respect patient confidentiality when reporting on sensitive healthcare issues.
DATTH also urged the public to stop spreading unverified information and to refrain from vilifying doctors at Tamale Teaching Hospital.
While the committee of enquiry investigates the matter, the Association reaffirmed its full support for the doctor involved, praising his leadership and commitment to improving patient care despite difficult conditions.
The statement concluded with a warning that if healthcare workers continue to be blamed for poor outcomes caused by lack of basic resources, the Association may be forced to consider actions that could disrupt industrial harmony.
Meanwhile news trickling in indicate that an emergency meeting of all doctors at the hospital is being planned to discuss the way forward.
The developments highlight ongoing challenges within Ghana’s healthcare system and the need for constructive dialogue between government officials and frontline medical personnel.
