The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has condemned an incident in which three Ghanaian peacekeepers were injured during heavy gunfire in southwestern Lebanon.
The peacekeepers, who serve with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), were wounded at their position in Al Qawzah on March 6, 2026.
In a statement, the UN chief said: “The Secretary-General condemns the incident on Friday, 6 March, which resulted in three Ghanaian peacekeepers of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) being injured inside their position in Al Qawzah, southwestern Lebanon, amidst heavy firing. He wishes a swift and full recovery to the injured peacekeepers.
“The Secretary-General underscores that the safety and security of UN personnel and property must be respected at all times, and that those responsible must be held accountable. The inviolability of UN installations must be respected by all.
“The United Nations urges the parties to de-escalate immediately and fully adhere to their obligations under Security Council resolution 1701 (2006).”*
The incident occurred amid heightened tensions in the region, where UN peacekeepers monitor the cessation of hostilities under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, adopted after the 2006 Lebanon War.
UNIFIL peacekeepers, including personnel from Ghana, are deployed in southern Lebanon to help maintain stability along the border area.
