Public Universities in the country are facing a possible shutdown if UTAG does not call off its strike close of this week.
This is the position of President of the University of Ghana Chapter of UTAG, Dr. Samuel Nkuumban, in an interview with GBC News.
The rules governing Public Universities state that Institutions are to shut down completely after 21 days of non-academic activity.
UTAG says discussions are at a standstill.
This follows several appeals by the Vice-Chancellors of Ghana and the Minister of Education for UTAG to return to the lecture Halls while negotiations continue. Dr Nkuumban told Nathaniel Nartey that UTAG will no longer listen to verbal assurances from the government, due to past experiences.
”The Association has been sympathetic to the plight of students”, he said.
Meanwhile, Africa Education Watch, EDUWATCH, a Think-Tank has raised concerns with the posture of the government in the negotiation process with UTAG.
Research Analyst with EDUWATCH, Divine Kpe said the government has not demonstrated commitment towards resolving the impasse to enable them to return to the Lecture Halls.
