The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) have threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if the government fails to pay their book and research allowances by June 13, 2025.

In a joint statement released on Monday, June 9, the three unions expressed concern over the continued delay in the disbursement of the allowances, saying it is causing serious anxiety and uncertainty among their members. They noted that many lecturers depend on the funds to support their academic work and research activities.

Following a joint meeting on Sunday, June 8, 2025, the unions said they had agreed to exercise patience regarding the delay in the release of the applicable exchange rate. However, they emphasised that they would not accept any payment beyond September 2025.

The unions also reminded the government that the book and research allowance is not a discretionary gesture, but a legally binding component of their Conditions of Service.

They warned that failure to meet the June 13 deadline would be interpreted as an official notice to strike, leading to industrial action across universities and colleges nationwide.

The unions called on the government to act swiftly to prevent a nationwide disruption of academic activities and safeguard the well-being of lecturers and the broader education sector.
