Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on October 7, 2021 celebrated his 58th Birthday at the Weija Leprosarium serving the inmates with breakfast.

Dr. Bawumia is noted for his generosity towards the needy, as well as his special affection for the vulnerable in society, especially lepers. He said the government has keen interest in the welfare of the needy and the physically challenged. Vice President Bawumia in a brief remark expressed gratitude to God for how far he has brought him. He said although today is a joyous occasion, it also brings fond memories of how he celebrated his birthday last year with his late mother.

Vice President Dr. Bawumia in 2017 voluntarily offered himself to be Patron of the Lepers Society to assist them and to also show others that the inmates are cured and harmless. As a life patron of Lepers Aid, Ghana and an advocate of cured lepers, the Vice President has over the years been supporting them with donations and championing the agenda to improve the general well-being of the vulnerable and excluded in society.

Dr Bawumia said the government has keen interest in the affairs of the vulnerable stressing that there has been a lot of attention dedicated to the less privileged in society through the District Assemblies Common Fund. Vice President Bawumia called for attention and care for people living with leprosy and also urged all to stop discriminating against people living with the disease.

Chairman of the Lepers Aid Committee Rev. Father Andrew Campbell was grateful to the Vice President for his benevolence towards the leprosarium, and for the projects spearheaded by the Vice President for lepers across the country.

Vice President Bawumia, his wife Hajia Samira Bawumia, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Shirley Ayorkor Botchway and Rev. Father Campbell served breakfast to the Lepers. The Vice President donated 100 bags of rice, 100 cartoons of drinks, 100 packs of drinks and a cash of GHC10,000 to the Leprosarium.
