The Ghana Highway Authority is to collaborate with the Police Service to check the rate at which ”overweight” and ”over-height” vehicles cause damage to roads.

Perpetrators of such illegalities are to be surcharged by the Authority. Acting Chief Executive of the Ghana Highway Authority Christian Nti told Nathaniel Nartey that the Authority has put in place proactive measures to curb the menace.

He said this when he paid a working visit to Broadcasting House in Accra.

”Off late we’ve had incidents where vehicles fully loaded exceeding the permitted axles damaging our trunk roads and also some of those vehicles hitting the surface of our bridges. In the past they would do it and go scot free, but of late we have put in place measures that whoever will destroy any bridge you will pay for it. The Police will apprehend you and then we will surcharge you. But going forward we need to wait for the damage to take place. We need to put in place mechanisms to ensure that we don’t even have the incident in the first place.

Some because of money, I will call it greed, they will overload their vehicles”, according to the Acting Chief Executive of the Ghana Highway Authority, Christian Nti.
