Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has disclosed that about 4,732 Ghanaians have so far received support from the National Rental Assistance Scheme, which was rolled out on January 31, 2023, in Accra.
The initiative was rolled out as a pilot program initially covering six regions: Greater Accra, Ashanti, Western, Eastern, Bono East, and Northern.
The minister hailed the initiative, which was designed to provide low-interest loans directly to landlords on behalf of eligible Ghanaians, who then repay the scheme in affordable monthly installments, as a success, with a 99 percent recovery rate.
Mr. Adjei, addressing the media during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, said the programme is easing housing pressures for beneficiaries while ensuring government funds remain fully recoverable.
According to him, 2,031 individuals benefited from the scheme in 2025 alone, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 4,732 since inception.
“At inception, the scheme was advanced a seed money of GH₵27 million, and over time, the principal and interest have rolled over and accrued a total of GH₵71.7 million, meaning the scheme is doing well,” he disclosed, highlighting the programme’s financial sustainability.
The minister further emphasised that the near-perfect recovery rate demonstrates the scheme’s effectiveness and positions it for nationwide rollout.
“The programme’s eligibility criteria, application process, and beneficiaries’ success stories highlight its effectiveness in addressing housing needs and enhancing community well-being, and the government is poised to take the necessary steps in the short to medium term, to scheme up the operations of the Scheme across all 16 Regions of the country,” he said.
The National Rental Assistance Scheme (NRAS) was officially launched by the former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on January 31, 2023, in Accra.
The government committed initial funding of GH¢30 million as seed money to kickstart the first phase in the six operational regions: Greater Accra, Ashanti, Western, Eastern, Bono East, and Northern.
Within its first year (by January 31, 2024), the scheme disbursed approximately GH¢19 million to support 1,492 beneficiaries.
