60 Years of Rotary in Ghana

Rotary Club Ghana, has turned 60 since October 1958 when the first Rotary Club in Ghana was launched with one Club, “Rotary Club of Accra”. Sixty years hence, there are now 49 Rotary clubs in Ghana. Ghana is part of district 9102, headed by District Governor, Jeffery Afful.

Rotary is the world’s largest Service Organization with 1.2 million members and 35,000 clubs across the globe. Speaking on the Uniiq Breakfast show, the past President of Rotary Club of Accra, Airport and P.R Representative for Ghana, District 1902, Mr. William Ofori said, the area of focus of Rotary Club Ghana is to promote world peace, fight diseases which includes polio, provide clean water, sanitation and hygiene. The Club also have lot of projects to undertake such as, save mother and children, support education and grow local economy. Also, Polio eradication is one of the projects that the club has embarked on.

 “One of our projects is Polio eradication which started in 1985, where we had over 350,000 Polio cases around the world. Last year there were only 22 cases in three countries. In Ghana, we haven’t had any Polio case in ten years.” he noted.

The Country Director of Millennium Promise a major partner to Rotary Club Ghana, Chief Nathaniel Ebo Sarko, also on the show said they have been supporting the activities of the Club at the community level through community health workers. He stresses that the Millennium Promise will provide a very strong support to Rotary Club Ghana. He further explained that, the Club have a lot of developmental agenda on their desk therefore the Millennium Promise will rally a lot of support to them.

 “We have the technical expertise on the ground regarding developmental projects from the Government level all the way down to the District Assemblies and to the Communities. We have had a lot of events that have culminate into Policy decisions at the National level. That’s what we bring to the table. Making sure that we rally and mobilize the society and the community to support Rotary” he said.

 According to Mr. Ofori, Rotary Club opens its door to everybody.  There is variety of profession available in every Rotary club and there is also gender and age balance.
