The last time a Ghanaian referee was appointed for an AFCON tourney was in 2015 in Equatorial Guinea, where Joseph Lamptey and Malick Alidu Salifu were named in the list. The list had referees from Egypt, Tunisia, Zambia, Seychelles, Madagascar, Tunisia Cameroon, Burundi, Kenya, Ethiopia, Senegal, Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Morocco, South Africa, DR Congo, Rwanda, Chad, Comoros, Lesotho, Libya, Niger, Sudan, Republic of Congo, and Uganda. The biggest Africa football festival is set to commence on June 21- July 19  in five cities in Egypt namely, Ismailia, Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and Port-Said.

The 2019 AFCON had been increased from 16 to 32 teams for the month-long tourney.
