The government has announced that the fourth power generation unit at the Akosombo Dam has been successfully restored to operation, representing a major step toward stabilizing Ghana’s electricity supply after recent disruptions.

The update was shared in a Facebook post by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor. The fourth unit was restored just hours after the successful return of the third unit, highlighting rapid progress in recovering generation capacity lost following the fire outbreak at the Akosombo substation.

“At 9:09pm, the fourth unit at Akosombo Dam was successfully brought into operation, an encouraging step that strengthens power generation and reflects the dedication and expertise of the team behind the effort” the minister wrote in the facebook post

The fire damaged the control room and resulted in the loss of more than 1,000 megawatts of power to the national grid, causing instability and intermittent outages.

The gradual restoration of the units is expected to boost generation capacity and improve the reliability of the power system, as engineers continue efforts to fully restore operations at the facility, which remains a key component of Ghana’s electricity supply.

Technical teams have been working around the clock under challenging conditions to repair the damaged infrastructure and bring additional units back online.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a resilient and stable power system while supporting the engineers and technicians driving the recovery process.

The latest developments indicate a gradual easing of supply pressures, with authorities stressing that all necessary steps are being taken to restore stable electricity to homes and businesses as quickly as possible.
