NAC Breda’s relegation from the Dutch Eredivisie to the Eerste Divisie has been officially confirmed, despite the club’s final‑round fixture not yet being completed in the 2025–26 season. The relegation was sealed by other results across the league, which left the club mathematically unable to escape the drop, regardless of what happens in their remaining games.
How the relegation was confirmed
At the time of the decision, 16th‑placed FC Volendam moved to 32 points after a 1–1 draw with Excelsior, seven points clear of NAC Breda with just two matches left in the season. Even though Breda still had those two games, Volendam’s point cushion meant the club could not catch them, fixing NAC in 17th place in the 18‑team league and sending them down to the second tier for 2026–27.
The abandoned Heerenveen clash
NAC Breda’s penultimate match, a home fixture against Heerenveen, was abandoned in the 82nd minute due to fireworks and flares being thrown by fans at the stadium, prompting match officials to suspend play. The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) later ruled that the remainder of the match be replayed behind closed doors in Heerenveen, but by then the league math had already relegated Breda irrespective of the final score.
Ghanaian stars in the relegation battle
Former Black Stars captain André Dede Ayew, who joined NAC Breda as a free agent in January, has so far scored just one goal in 16 league appearances. He lines up with fellow Ghana internationals Kamal Sowah and Denis Odoi, both of whom are now set to spend next season in the Eerste Divisie if they remain with the club. The drop represents a major setback for the team and for Ayew, whose short Eredivisie stint ends with the club slipping out of the top flight.
Emotional blow for the club
NAC Breda General Manager Remco Oversier described the outcome as a “huge blow” for everyone connected to the club, adding that relegation “hits extremely hard.” The Dutch side will now have to regroup in the lower division, rebuild its squad, and attempt an immediate bounce‑back while managing the fallout from the fan‑stadium incident that contributed to the abandonment of the crucial Heerenveen game.
