The Ashanti Region has run out of beds to treat COVID-19 patients. According to the Regional Health Directorate, the region may not have the capacity to  handle additional exponential cases of coronavirus as there is a shortage of beds in  facilities.

This was disclosed by the Ashanti Regional Director of Health,  Dr Emmanuel Tinkorang at a Media briefing in Kumasi. He said the Region is seeking to expand it’s Covid- 19 Treatment Facilities from 38 to 138 to deal with the situation..

The Ashanti Region currently has 2403 Covid 19 cases becoming the region with the second highest number of cases. Obuasi municipality had the highest number of cases but now performing better as Kumasi Metropolis has taken over with increasing figures.

Six Districts have not recorded any case yet. The region has recorded 38 deaths including the Medical Director of the Kwadaso SDA Hospital, with 778 recoveries and one patient critically ill.

Ninety seven out of the total number of cases recorded are Heath personnel with the majority being nurses followed by doctors. The Ashanti Regional Director of Health, Dr Emmanuel Tinkorang explained that most of the cases referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital are delayed cases who were at private facilities.

He said the cases now don’t show the known signs of cold, coughing but rather malaria or fever like symptoms. He said there is the need to build the capacity of medical personnel of private facilities on this new development. Dr Tinkorang noted that the level of adherence to the Protocols and guidelines as prescribed by the Ghana Health Service, W.H.O. and government is worrying.

Dr Tinkorang also disclosed that almost all the treatment centers as well as the four isolation centers are now full, thus the need for expansion.
