$2.2bn Eastern railway project ready to take off

A Ghana Europe Railway Consortium (GERC), is in the lead to be contracted to construct a 340 kilometer Eastern Railway line at an estimated cost of $2.2 billion.

The project will include the construction of the railway line, electrification, stations and rolling stock from Tema to Accra.

The Eastern line stretches from Accra to Kumasi with the branch line from Achimota to Tema Port.

Addressing the media in the Eastern Region, the Chief Executive Officer of Project Development Africa and the Spokesperson for GERC, Ing. Heinz Kroczeck said the consortium is ready and prepared to begin executing the project immediately.

Ing. Kroczek said GERC believes that the Railway Eastern line will be a game changer for Ghana. He said the benefits that will accrue from the project is propagated to increase the country’s GDP by at least 1.5 percent per year.

The Deputy Minister of Railway development, Agyenim Boateng, said the Railway Eastern line development will be of great benefit to the country.
