The Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana is asking telecommunication companies to insure them. The   Association, said the mobile money business is a risky one and therefore calls for the formulation and implementation of an insurance scheme to cushion merchants.

It noted that the upsurge in armed robbery attacks on merchants has put fear into majority of the 95,000 members across the country as there are no protection for them and their operations.

The Association noted that the members have become target for robbery and fraud.  It noted that it is their wish to work deep into the night to enable the public to have access to money during emergencies but the absence of an insurance policy is preventing most of the members from doing so.

The Association suggested that premiums for the insurance could be shared among telecom operators and mobile money agents, since the operators provided the system for the transactions while they provide cash for the business.

Touching on other issues, the Association appealed to the telecoms to make available their withholding tax certificates to them after deducting the five per cent and filing with the Ghana Revenue Authority.

It observed that the current practice where telecommunication companies deduct them without showing any proof of filing tax returns is not the best
