A coalition of political parties has officially notified the Ghana Police Service of their intent to stage a peaceful public demonstration on Monday, May 5, 2025, against what they describe as a politically motivated attack on the judiciary. In a notice signed by Richard Ahiagbah on behalf of the participating parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), and People’s National Party (PNP) expressed grave concern over recent actions they claim are aimed at the removal of the Chief Justice of the Republic.
According to the parties, such maneuvers pose a serious threat to the independence of the judiciary, the rule of law, and Ghana’s constitutional democracy.
The demonstration is scheduled to begin at 5:00 a.m. from the area opposite the Supreme Court, proceed past Parliament House, and conclude at the Jubilee House, where a formal petition will be presented.
The notice emphasized the peaceful nature of the protest and requested the support and cooperation of the Ghana Police Service to ensure public order and security throughout the exercise.
Organizers pledged to conduct the demonstration within the confines of the law, maintaining the dignity and decorum expected of democratic expression.
“This bipartisan effort is a clear signal of our collective resolve to resist the subjugation of our judiciary and to protect the values of our republic,” the statement said. “We count on the usual professionalism and partnership of the Ghana Police Service in upholding the spirit of democracy.”
The Inspector General of Police, the Ghana Police Service in Accra, and all Regional Police Commanders have been copied in the notice.
This protest comes at a time of heightened political tension, with the parties accusing the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating moves that could jeopardize Ghana’s democratic gains.
