The Convener of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, Dr Ken Ashigbey has called on the government to declare a state of emergency in parts of Ghana where illegal mining, also known as galamsey, is being practiced heavily, warning that the country’s natural resources and security are under serious threat.
Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show on Tuesday April 22, 2025, Dr Ashigbey said the situation in galamsey-affected areas is worsening, with armed gangs and foreign mercenaries protecting illegal miners.
He stressed that these activities are destroying water bodies, farmlands, and endangering lives.
He explained that the call for a state of emergency is not meant to affect the entire country, but only the areas where illegal mining is out of control.
This, he said, will allow the President to take strong and extraordinary actions to stop the destruction and restore order.
“When they were in opposition, they supported the idea of a state of emergency. Now, it is even more important to act they’re in power. We must preserve not just our future, but our present,” he said.
Dr. Ashigbey also criticized the practice of simply deporting foreign nationals involved in illegal mining without proper punishment. He said offenders should face legal action in Ghana, including fines and jail time, to serve as a deterrent.
“Deporting them without punishment sends a wrong message — it tells them Ghana is a safe haven for illegal activities,” he warned.
He further encouraged the public to keep speaking out and supporting the fight against galamsey, urging that the government’s recent efforts and arrests must be followed by stronger legal actions and enforcement.
Dr. Ashigbey concluded by calling on the President to review current policies and make the bold decision to declare a targeted state of emergency in the worst-affected areas to help win the war against illegal mining.
