Education should be an instrument for development and not just personal achievement - PUG VC urges graduates

The Vice Chancellor of the Presbyterian University, Ghana, PUG, Professor John Ofosu-Anim has advised Ghanaians to always remember that acquiring education is not only for personal achievement but a tool for societal transformation and development.

Professor Ofosu-Anim gave the advice during the Seventh Congregation Ceremony of the School of Graduate Studies and Research of the Presbyterian University, Ghana at the Ramseyer Training Centre in Kwahu-Abetifi in the Kwahu East District of the Eastern Region. 

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ofosu-Anim advising the graduands reiterated that acquiring education should not be for personal advancement but serves as an instrument in contributing to development and also making positive impact in the lives of others.

He charged them to always strive for excellence and use the knowledge acquired to help make a meaningful impact wherever they find themselves in life. 

Prof. Ofosu-Anim revealed that PUG is strengthening its School of Graduate Studies and Research for it to become a centre of excellence for Graduate Studies in the country. He hinted that the country’s wealth in natural resource requires judicious management to ensure long-term benefits. 

The Chancellor of PUG who doubles as the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye mentioned that the ability of the country to renovate, create sustainable solutions and transform the socio-economic realities of the country rests significantly on the capacities of the graduate institutions to produce critical thinkers and skilled professionals.

Rt. Rev. Dr. Opare Kwakye noted that graduate research is a national priority and therefore there is the need for government to support graduate students, especially those in the private Universities, with funding schemes and research grants. 

The Seventh Congregation Ceremony of the School of Graduate Studies and Research of the Presbyterian University, Ghana at the Ramseyer Training Centre in Kwahu-Abetifi saw the graduation of 350 students in seven disciplines. These include 26 students graduating with Master of Education in Educational Studies, 39 with MPhil in Educational Studies, 44 with Master of Arts in International Development Studies, 15 with Master of Science in Environmental Health and Sanitation, 10 with Master of Science in Natural Resources Management, 28 with Master of Science in Financial Risk Management, and 188 students graduating with Masters in Public Health.

 

This was after passing all courses taken, obtaining the minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average, CGPA and satisfying all the requirements of the departments, and faculty boards as required to be awarded a master’s degree.
