Three Education Unions including civil society groups in Education affiliated to Education International, a global education advocacy organisation have called for government’s immediate action to stem the increased privatisation and commercialisation of education in Ghana.

At the end of a three day validation workshop in Accra, the teacher unions comprising GNAT, NAGRAT and TEWU bemoaned the trend whereby the government of the day appears to be ceding its constitutional obligation of providing free compulsory quality basic education for every child to profit-minded private individuals.

The group argues that this has led to the exploitation of the poor under the guise of low fee basic education and a continuously falling standard of education in the country.

In a communiqué issued in Accra and presented to the Ministry of Education, the National Secretary of NAGRAT, Samuel Dadzie expressed the groups displeasure at the incidence of an Education Outcome Fund (EOF), which is intended to support private players and legitimise profit making in the provision of education in Ghana.

Mr. Dadzie on behalf of the Coalition asked government to provide the needed funding and adequate resources to fully role out a compulsory free quality KG, Primary and JHS education in the same light it is implementing the Free SHS programme.
