Education Minister bemoans low female enrolment in TVET Institutions

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu has toured some technical institutions in the Eastern Region serving as centres for the ongoing 2025 Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, TVET, Certificate II examination.

A total of 55,295 candidates are partaking in the examination nationwide, consisting of 40,339 boys and 14,956 girls.

The tour by the minister and officials from the Commission of TVET, and the Ghana TVET Service aimed at assessing the conduct of the exams and to encourage the candidates.  

The centres visited were Koforidua Technical Institute, KOTECH, St. Paul Technical School, SPATS, and Kwabeng Anglican Senior High Technical School, KASHTS.

In an interview with the media, the Minister of Education, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, emphasized that Technical and Vocational Education and Training, TVET,  remains central to Ghana’s national development strategy, equipping learners with practical, industry-relevant skills that foster economic growth, job creation, and innovation.

He called for increased investment in TVET to equip the youth with the needed skills to thrive in today’s modern world. He further expressed concern about the low enrollment of females in TVET institutions and called for measures to encourage young girls to consider TVET as a viable alternative educational pathway.

“We have to invest more in technical and vocational education in order to equip our young people for the competitive world of work. TVET is still not female friendly in Ghana, we need to do more to work the appetite of our young girls to want to take TVET as an alternative route for education.”, he said.

The Minister added that the ministry of education is pushing for the establishment of a dedicated TVET Fund aimed at ensuring sustainable financing for the sector.

The Director General of the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, CTVET, Zakaria Sulemana indicated that exams scheduled for Friday will go ahead despite the day being declared a holiday, as the examination schedule was set months ago.

“The schedule for the exams was drawn several months ago, and Friday is part of the days for writing the exams. Unfortunately, it was just last week that Friday was declared as a National holiday. Regardless of the holiday, the Certificate II exams scheduled for Friday will still come on so all candidates, and their supervisors and invigilators should report to their various centres on Friday. “, he said.

The exams, which commenced today, June 30, will end on Monday, July 28, 2025. The examination is not merely an academic requirement but also reflects the country’s commitment to building a skilled workforce capable of meeting industry demands and supporting Ghana’s broader industrialisation goals through quality TVET.
