The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to raise its funding for student loans from GHC60 million to GHC150 million.
Speaking at the inauguration of the new Board of Trustees for the Students Loan Trust Fund in Accra on April 29, 2025, the Minister said the increase is part of government’s plan to support more students, especially those in private universities.
Currently, GETFund has only released GHC20 million of the approved GHC60 million for this year. The Minister said this amount is not enough to meet students’ needs.
“Government wants to expand the student loan scheme to include private school students. If we are going to do that, then the fund must increase to GHC150 million next year,” Mr. Iddrisu said.
This move comes as part of a larger initiative to reduce the financial burden on students and their families. The government has already announced plans to cover fees for first-year students in both public and private universities.
Despite some public opposition, the government says it is committed to this “No Fees” policy.
Cynthia Amerley Amartefio, the new Board Chairperson, assured the Minister that the Board will work to ensure the money is properly given to students who truly need it.
