The Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La, has announced that the Tema Metropolitan Assembly together with the Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly is setting up a committee of experts to investigate the cause of the last Friday’s fire at the Kpone Landfill Site.

The flame generated thick smoke in the area blocking the view of the travelling public especially drivers who ply the route.

As at now the cause of the fire is yet to be established.

Mr. Anang-La, in the interim, has advised resident close to the Site to relocate since the smoke is still emanating from the debris.

Earlier when Obonu News visited the Site some aggrieved residents in the vicinity called on the government to relocate the Site, following the fire outbreak.

According to the residents, the constant smoke from the fire is a threat to their health.

Responding to the concerns, the Tema Metropolitan Waste Management Officer, Derrick Anku, said 45 percent of waste generated within the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area ends up at the Kpone Landfill Site, which puts much pressure on the facility.

He explained that the other Sites receive less than 10 percent of the City’s total waste generation.

He added that the level of recycling of waste is very low and the way forward is waste segregation to facilitate easy management.
