The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is set to commemorate the 2025 African Vaccination Week and Child Health Promotion Week with nationwide activities aimed at improving child health and increasing access to essential immunization services.

The African Vaccination Week will take place during the last week of April, followed by Child Health Promotion Week in the second week of May.

This year’s commemoration is observed under the theme, “Every Child Deserves a Healthy Future; Invest in Your Child. Attend ‘Weighing’ Regularly.” The focus is on raising awareness about the availability of free child health services and encouraging regular visits to child welfare clinics.

In a press statement released on April 24, 2025, the Ghana Health Service emphasized the critical role vaccination plays in preventing deadly childhood diseases and improving public health.

 “Despite significant progress in recent years, many Africa countries, including Ghana, continue to face challenges in achieving universal access to vaccines,” the statement noted. “These observances also aim to raise awareness about the importance of immunization, encourage community participation, and increase vaccination coverage along with other child health interventions”  part of the statement added.

Throughout the commemorative weeks, parents and caregivers are encouraged to take children under five years to the nearest health center or outreach point to access a range of free services.

 These essential health services include;

Immunization, Vitamin A supplementation, and deworming

Growth monitoring, nutrition assessment, and birth registration

Provision and promotion of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs)

Nutrition counseling

Health promotion and education in all health facilities across the country

The Ghana Health Service is calling on healthcare workers, civil society organizations, and community members to work together in promoting child health and expanding access to life-saving interventions. By doing so, the Service hopes to bridge gaps in vaccine coverage and protect children from preventable illnesses.

The GHS urges all Ghanaians to support the campaign and ensure that every child gets a healthy start to life.
