The Ghana Tourism Authority, (GTA), in partnership with the Ghana Tourism Federation, (GHATOF), is organizing series of free sensitization programs for the informal Food and Beverage sector.

The nationwide training, which will span a period of one month, is to sharpen the skills of operators and improve upon the quality of service delivery to boost the Tourism industry.

Speaking at a day’s training for Informal Food and Beverage players in Tema, the Deputy Chief Executive of the GTA, Ekow Sampson, said the sector constitutes about 80 percent of the tourism industry, therefore there is the need to train operators on issues that will help boost their businesses and encourage them to contribute to the Tourism Development Fund.

He said according to research, food poisoning and airborne diseases are becoming prevalent in Ghana, a situation he sees as disheartening.

He said it is therefore needful to educate food handlers on food safety and preservation to avoid and minimize air borne diseases.

The Dean of the Graduate School of the Kumasi Technical University, Dr. Patricia Owusu Darko, who took participants through food safety and hygiene, said the training is to equip food handlers with the rudiments of food safety.

This she explained is to equip them to handle food in a hygienic manner.

On food poisoning, she called on scientists to help research and track the causes and premise for food poisoning for proper documentation to help curtail it to the barest minimum.

Some participants at the training expressed their appreciation to the Authority for sensitizing them and promised to impart the knowledge acquired to their fellow workers.
