Medical doctor at Eya Medical Consult, Dr Esther Yesutor Agbozo, has said many chronic conditions can be effectively managed if patients receive both medical treatment and psychological support.

According to her, a diagnosis of a chronic illness should not be seen as the end of life, but rather as the beginning of a treatment journey that can still lead to a full and productive life.

“Chronic illness is not a death sentence. Many conditions can be managed, but we must also pay attention to the patient’s mental health, not just the physical illness,” she said.

Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show, Dr Agbozo noted that patients often experience fear, anxiety and depression after being diagnosed with chronic conditions. She explained that when these emotional challenges are left unaddressed, they can negatively affect treatment outcomes.

“I always tell my patients that whatever diagnosis your doctor gives you is not a death sentence,” she said.

Dr Agbozo emphasised the importance of early counselling, peer support and open communication between patients and healthcare professionals.

She said these measures help patients adjust to their treatment plans, build resilience and maintain a good quality of life.

She concluded that with proper management and support, many people living with chronic conditions can continue to lead fulfilling and productive lives.

Ghana’s healthcare system continues to face challenges in mental health service delivery, with limited specialists and resources, particularly outside major urban centres.
