Managing Director of Third Eyecare and Vision Centre, Dr Kwame Oben-Nyarko, has dismissed the long-standing myth that gari causes eye problems or blindness.

A popular saying in many communities claims that “gari will make you blind.” This misconception has discouraged some people from eating the staple food, fearing it might harm their vision.

However, during his recent appearance on the GTV Breakfast Show, Dr Oben-Nyarko clarified the nutritional value of gari and reassured viewers that it is not harmful to eye health.

“Gari contains high amounts of carbohydrates that provide significant energy requirements. It is a staple food for many, and I encourage everyone to continue eating their gari without fear,” Dr Oben-Nyarko said.

He also stressed the importance of proper nutrition in maintaining eye health, particularly the role of vitamin A in preventing vision problems.

“Vitamin A is crucial because it supports the function of the retina, which is the light-sensitive part of the eye. Without enough vitamin A, the cells in your retina will not be healthy enough to pick up light effectively,” he explained.

Highlighting vitamin A sources, he noted: “Foods rich in vitamin A include palm oil and colourful vegetables like carrots and potatoes. These foods contain carotenoids and retinoids that are essential for maintaining good vision.”

Dr Oben-Nyarko further emphasised the link between nutrition and eye health, adding: “Addressing nutritional deficiencies, such as vitamin A deficiency, can be as simple as ensuring that children are well nourished. It’s about making informed dietary choices.”
